We found another composting toilet near us in Leogane, being built by Hands On. We were very excited to make the connection and to see other people using this great idea to solve two of Haiti's biggest problems: 1) Lack of sewage treatment and 2) Depleted soil that's not fit to grow food.
The poop cycle. You probably won't believe it until you've seen/used one, but these toilets do not smell at all. So much more pleasant to use than most toilets here in Haiti.

We visited that toilet when we were there, too, hoping to be able to incorporate it somehow in our sq. ft. gardening projects. I decided it wasn't something Sustain Haiti could take on, but it was sure cool to look at. I didn't get to use it, but standing next to it, you're right, it didn't stink at all :).
We'll only be using the humanure compost in the nursery where we'll be raising trees and plants to sell. The vegetable gardens will be fertilized with animal poop and kitchen compost.
